Blue Mountains City Council is preparing to undertake a floodplain risk management study and plan for the North Katoomba to Leura study area. The objective of this study is to improve understanding of local flood behaviour and impacts, and better inform management of flood risks in the study area.

What is the study area?

The study area includes North Katoomba and North Leura and is defined by the following boundaries as shown in study area map:

  • To the south bound by the natural ridgeline which contains the transport corridor of the Great Western Highway.
  • To the west bound by the natural ridgeline which generally follows Barton Road and Mort Street.
  • To the north by the boundary of the Blue Mountains National Park.
  • To the east by the natural ridgeline which generally follows Mount Hay Road.

The study area includes Katoomba Creek, Yosemite Creek and Govetts Creek which all flow into the World Heritage Blue Mountains National Park (WGBMNP) and ultimately into the Grose River to the north of the catchment. Natural waterways contain a number of distinct hanging swamps. (The study area includes only council managed land and does not include any lands in the World Heritage Blue Mountains National Park. The catchment of Wentworth Creek is not part of the study area.)

Expressions of interest have now closed to join the Floodplain Risk Management Committee.
