Our City, Our Future - Looking After Our Community Assets

This consultation has concluded.

Have your say on an important proposal that will enable the Council to continue to look after community assets including roads, stormwater infrastructure, park facilities and sportsgrounds.

In 2010, Blue Mountains City Council obtained approval for a special variation to rates of 4.4% to secure much-needed additional funding for maintaining and renewing built community assets. This variation raised $5.5 million over three years and is due to expire on 30 June 2013.

The Council aims to provide the best possible services and facilities to the community, while remaining financially sustainable today and in the future. To be able to do this, the Council is considering applying to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to continue the current rate variation on an ongoing basis. Many councils in NSW apply for such variations and the majority are approved.

The proposed application is to continue the current rate variation of 4.4% past its expiry date on an ongoing basis. This would be in addition to the annual rate peg increase (recently announced by IPART as 3.4% for next year).

By each ratepayer continuing to pay an average $1.08 per week, the Council can raise around $23 million over 10 years – which it would spend on priority community asset maintenance and renewal.

Detailed information on this proposal is available in the brochure and information sheets which can be downloaded from the libary to the right. In this information you can find:

  • proposed program of works to be undertaken if the continued variation is supported by the community and approved by IPART
  • average dollar impact of the continuation of the variation on each town, business sub-category and farmland
  • examples of the Council's achievements in being efficient and effective, including productivity achievements and revenue raising initiatives
  • how we compare to other councils in terms of number of assets.
