Dog Off Leash

This consultation has concluded.

Blue Mountains City Council is investigating the suitability of three selected sites in the lower mountains for Dog Off-Leash areas.  The sites are Glenbrook Park, Glenbrook; Whitton Park, Glenbrook; and Batman Reserve, Springwood. 

Council would like to know your opinion on the suitability of these Parks as Dog Off-Leash areas. 

You can provide feedback by downloading and completing a survey for Glenbrook and Whitton Parks or for  Batman Reserve (see Library at the right of this page) or by providing a comment in the Forum below.

Do you think more Dog Off-Leash facilities are required in the lower mountains?

One of the principles of managing dogs in open space areas is to provide a heirarchy of opportunities.  This includes,

Local Use.  Everyday use within 1km of most people, and includes ON Leash exercise opportunities.

Occasional Use. Accessible within 15 minutes of most people and may include time share Off-Leash opportunities.

District Use.  One facility should be available over a broader geographical/planning area, which can offer Off-Leash opportunities through daylight hours. This may incorporate a social setting and could require additional infrastructure.

Other principles to consider are (i) Visiting a Park with a dog is a valid form of recreation, (ii) Community benefits are provided from people excercising dogs, (iii) Equitable provision of recreation space, (iv) Sharing limited open space, (v) Dog owners have an obligation of responsibility in public spaces, (vi) Some spaces are not appropriate for dogs or off-leash activities.

Dogs can have an impact on recreational space and the local environment. Is this a significant issue for the possible dog off-leash sites in the lower mountains?

Whitton Park is a large area. Do you think the Park would be suitable for a dog off-leash area to allow dogs to exercise?

Glenbrook Park is a popular place for tourists. Do you think that a Dog Off-Leash area in Glenbrook Park, even fully fenced, would encourage or discourage tourists using the Park?

Batman Park is used by lots of children. If some of the Reserve is fenced off for a dog off-leash area, do you think this will change the way children use this space?
